The
History of the Outlaws League |
. |
The league was started, as the story was passed down to me, by a few Sacramento, CA area
players as a Face to Face "Basic" dice league in 1989. It was the following
season that it became a traditional Mail oriented league, with ten teams in two divisions
and the locals still continuing to play Face to Face. |
. |
In 1993 two additional teams were added to the league, and the first Computer players
arrived on the scene, but it remained a Mail league with the majority of the members still
using the boards. |
. |
The league as we know it today began in 1994, when the membership agreed to expand by four
teams to begin play the following season, thus changing to a four division format with
four teams each, and a newsletter was started. The majority of owners after the expansion
teams were chosen, would be Computer players. |
. |
Begining in 1996 the two league format was adopted, the current Playoff system was put in
place, and the league transitioned to a Computer only league. In 1999 the league felt
strong enough to expand yet again by two teams, the league's first Web-site was introduced
replacing the newsletter, and e-mail replaced conventional mail as the standard for
submitting stats and results. But for all the steps forward in technology, expansion
proved to be too much of a burden on the league, the one on one communication that had
helped keep and ensure the continuity was non-existent, and with many members discouraged,
the league nearly collapsed. |
. |
Subsequently in 2000, an overhaul was in order. Two vacant teams were disbanded, the
newsletter returned, the league adopted the C-File system, and strict reporting dates
started to be enforced. Slowly but surely the league regained it's strength and
continuity. |
. |
This league continues to move forward, adding Ballpark Effects for use begining in 2003,
and maintains it's continuity due in part to learning from our mistakes in 1999. Our
strong membership averages 6+ years in the league, without whose dedication and commitment
I would indeed not have the pleasure of APBA Baseball. |
